Welcome to Austria! Right above Italy, in central Europe lies one of the most beautiful places to visit. Vienna, Austria is one of the most populated Urban areas in the country, housing the Schoenbrunn Garden, Prater Amusement Park, Karlskirche and many other site seeing worthing stops. 

German is the official language and is spoken by about 88% of the population. Turkish being the next language with about 23% of the population.

Most of the and is taken up by the Alps but that just makes it even more unique with the scattered villages/cities, and it makes Austria rich in natural resources such as oil, coal, iron ore, timber, salt, copper, etc. 

It was home to many famous musicians, such as Mozart and Strauss, and is home to one of the oldest national flags.

Mood Board | Austria | Color Palette | WIP

This is a mood board of Austrian influences, the flag, architecture and symbols. I want to use a lot of white and red, and a dash of yellow.

This is a mood board of layout ideas. I want to use "big" quotes, overlaying text, mixed media and overlaying images.

Fact Book | Grid | WIP

The grid will be more defined in the Fact Book. The only thing that can break it will be images and quotes. There will always be a colored edge on the left side of the spread, except the cover, this will indicate what section of the book you are in. All images will be centered (If the spread is focused on said image,) Or they will be in the upper left hand corner or lower right and corner to work with body copy. Body copy will always be  in two columns on the right side and one column on the left unless body copy is small, then its in the form of two columns but only taking up one visible column. Big text such as headers and fact numbers can break through the color edges.

The cover image will be a full spread image. Table of contents will be numbered by the sections, easily distinguishable by color. These colors will be chosen from the Austria Branding Guidelines. Red, Pink-White, White, Yellow, Black, Grey-Blue. They will be used as intended form the Branding Guidelines color hierarchy. Same goes for the text. Facts pages may have two colored edges. Body copy will be heavier in the history section, with small interrupting quotes sprinkled about.

Mood Boards | Textures and Style | WIP

I want to push the boundaries with the Fact Book a bit and try illustrating. I like the style of line art with limited color, more of the one to two color ones. I also like the texture of acrylic. Keeping them in mind while working on this might make things more interesting.

I started the process with the art I want to use in it. I decided to recreate photos with line art and acrylic paint. I plan to do a lot more, but for now I started with these.

I started by taking the designs I painted and placed them in with a lot of the text. I want to space the text out more but so far I am really liking the look. It seems a bit busy with text (As stated), but this is simply a draft to see what works and what doesn't.

I decided after a few days of working to slowly take out the yellow. While I loved the look of the yellow, I needed the red and they weren't working well together. So I decided to remove yellow ad replace it with red, pink-white and the navy blue-grey. I also decided to add more photographs, instead of my original idea of only illustrations. Im leaning toward experimenting with collage, and mixing the medias more with overlapping. Just an idea though.

I decided to recreate all the art as collages with black and white print outs, ripped text, maps and acrylic paint. I also changed my color again to stay with red. I created the collages, scanned them in and edited them in photoshop before placing them into the book.

The final cover design, inside and outside was created last. The cover is featuring a collage and the inside of the cover is the flag. I mirrored the front and the back art for the cover so it comes together perfectly on the spine.

The final look of the fact book turned out nicely. I really liked the end result. I kept all images black and white and only used red as a solid color. A few statistic charts were also collaged along with the flag description page. The only color other than red that was used was the map of Austria. On the atlas it was pulled from, it was yellow. I enjoyed that little bit of change and kept it.
